Install a smart lock

Today, I'm going to show you how to install a smart lock. Smart locks can make your life easier in a number of ways.

For example, with a smart lock installed, you don't have to worry about losing or forgetting your keys. And you can easily check to make sure your front door is locked from anywhere. Here's what you'll need.

  1. The smart lock and Accessories.
  2. A screwdriver.
  3. Smartphone or Tablet.
  4. Smart lock app installed.
  5. Your network login info.

I'll be using the EUFY smart lock touch and a Google Pixel 4, so the process might be a little different, depending on your devices. Towards the end of the article, I'll also be using this Google home mini to show you how a voice assistant works with the EUFY smart lock.

The first step isn't very glamorous. You need to charge the battery. This might take a while, depending on the current charge, but don't worry, while it's charging, you can get to work on the rest.

Removing Old Lock

First, I'm going to remove the thumb turn, key mechanism, and deadbolt. I'll start by putting painter's tape over the key mechanism to hold it in place.

Using a screwdriver, remove the two screws holding the thumb turn.

Now, carefully remove it by pulling it away from the door. Then, remove the tape and remove the key mechanism.

Now, let's do the same for the deadbolt. Remove the two screws holding the deadbolt and slide it out of the door.

Installing a new smart lock

I've already measured the door to make sure it will fit, so with the old lock removed, just slide in the deadbolt, making sure the word top is facing up.

Then, screw it into the doorframe with the screws provided.

Next, if you don't already have one, install the included strike plate. My existing one will work, so I'll skip this step.

Slide the outside unit into place and route the cable under the deadbolt. You may want to use painter's tape to secure the outside unit.

Now, align the mounting plate and route the cable through the hole.

Then, attach the mounting plate to the doorframe. Make sure the screws go through the holes of the deadbolt and the mounting plate.

Now, remove the battery cover, and connect the cable.

Align the tailpiece with the key cylinder and attach the interior assembly to the mounting plate.

Use the thumb turn to make sure everything is moving smoothly.

Next, install the plug to cover the bottom screw hole and when the battery is fully charged up, you can install it here.

Congratulations, the hard part is over. Install a smart lock is done.

Pairing your smart lock with the app

Now, it's time to get it configured using the app. Open the EUFY security app on your smartphone and tap add a device.

I'll select smart lock touch and wi-fi. The app will now request permission to access your camera. If you're okay with that, tap okay, and then tap while using the app.

Now, scan the QR code behind the battery cover on your lock. You'll see a short video on installation. Feel free to watch and when you're done, tap I have finished the installation.

Now, press the setup button until you hear a beep. After you release it, you'll hear a voice prompt. When you hear ready to set up, select I heard the voice, and tap next.

The app will now request GPS location information for your device. Review and if you're okay with that, select while using the app.

Now, the app will try to connect with your smart lock. Follow the prompts by closing the door and turning the thumb turn until the door is locked.

When the door is closed and locked, select I have closed and locked the door and tap calibrate the lock.

Great, mine seems to be working well. Now, you'll be prompted to give the lock a name. This comes in especially handy for voice control. I'll call mine front door and tap next.

Now, you'll be asked to set up a passcode to lock and unlock your door. After you enter a unique code, tap next.

Setting up fingerprint security

Now that your lock is installed and connected to your smartphone, you can program fingerprints.

To set up fingerprint security, select the lock and then tap manage access. As you can see, you can add or remove users. Tap the user to continue.

Tap fingerprint. And then tap add new print and start enrollment.

Here, you'll see some information to read through about fingerprint quality. Tap okay to continue, wait for your lock to tell you to start. Then place the finger you'd like to use at the top of the lock where it's highlighted by a red led.

Place your finger eight times. Try to move around a little so the sensor gets different angles.

When you hear fingerprint setup complete, you're done, and you can now unlock and lock your door with your fingertip.

You can add additional fingerprints by tapping add a new print or tap back to the exit.

Unlock your door

Of course, you can also use the app to lock or unlock your door. From the main screen, tap your door lock, and it will show its current status.

Drag the circle down to lock or unlock. Once it's completed, you'll hear a chime.

Pairing your smart lock with a smart assistant:

You can also unlock or lock the doors with your voice if you use a smart home assistant.

Let me show you how to do that using the google home mini.

In the google home app, tap the plus button.

Then tap set up the device, which works with Google, and magnifying glass.

Then type in EUFY.

Select EUFY security and then enter the email address and password associated with the EUFY app.

Choose set up a pin and tap confirm. And now you can say, "okay google, lock my front door," and it will do just that.
